New Season of 'On Stage at Curtis' Begins in October

Recitals by Curtis Students Featured Weekly on Y Arts

WHYY-TV (Channel 12) Broadcasts Select Program on October 4 and 25

Hear the legends of tomorrow in recital at the Curtis Institute of Music when the new season of On Stage at Curtis begins Wednesday, October 7. A new On Stage at Curtis program airs every Wednesday at 8 p.m. and is repeated on Friday at 9 p.m. and Sunday at 7 p.m. on Y Arts, WHYY's digital cable channel 12.2 (Comcast Channel 257, FiOS 474). Enjoy student recitals by today's finest young classical musicians on the stage of Field Concert Hall at the Curtis Institute of Music.

A select program featuring the 2009 Curtis On Tour ensemble will also be broadcast on WHYY-TV (channel 12.1, Comcast channels 12 and 240, FiOs 12 and 512) on Sunday, October 4 at 3 p.m. and Sunday, October 25 at 4 p.m. Watch the world premiere performance of faculty member David Ludwig's From the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, a song cycle based on the thousand-year-old quatrains of the Persian poet and scholar. The program also includes Stravinsky's Divertimento for Violin and Piano and the lively L'Histoire du soldat (The Soldier's Tale) with Dr. Ludwig as narrator.

Highlights from the rest of the season include a preview of Curtis's summer 2009 tour of Europe, graduation recitals by young musicians about to make their mark on the classical music world, works by Curtis composers, and performances by Curtis 20/21, the school's contemporary music ensemble.

Robotic video cameras installed in Field Concert Hall record more than one hundred student recitals every year, and WHYY selects some of the finest for broadcast each season. The recordings are also available to students and their teachers for instructional use and are preserved in the Curtis archives. A gift from the Joseph and Marie Field Foundation funded the acquisition and installation of the cameras and related video equipment.

The Curtis Institute of Music educates and trains exceptionally gifted young musicians for careers as performing artists on the highest professional level. One of the world's leading conservatories, Curtis is highly selective and provides full-tuition scholarships to all of its 160 students. In this intimate environment, students receive personalized attention from a celebrated faculty. A busy schedule of performances is at the heart of Curtis's distinctive "learn by doing" approach. This philosophy has produced an impressive number of notable artists since the school's founding in 1924, from such legends as Leonard Bernstein and Samuel Barber to current stars Juan Diego Flórez, Alan Gilbert, Hilary Hahn, Jennifer Higdon, Leila Josefowicz, Lang Lang, and Time for Three.

WHYY is the Philadelphia region’s prime public media service, providing news when you need it, entertainment when you want it, and education when it counts—on TV, radio, the web, mobile devices, and in the community.
