Tribute to Orlando Cole September 19

Legendary Cellist Honored With Performances, Remembrances, and Pictures

[PDF format]

(September 7, 2010) The Curtis Institute of Music remembers Orlando Cole, a renowned cellist and unparalleled figure in musical history, with a tribute on Sunday, September 19 at 3 p.m.

Among the students who entered the Curtis Institute of Music on the day its doors first opened in 1924, Orlando Cole had a profound impact on music in the twentieth century both as the cellist of the Curtis String Quartet and as a teacher at Curtis for over fifty years. “Landy” passed away in January at the age of 101, leaving behind former students who can be found throughout the world in major orchestras, chamber ensembles, and on the recital stage.

His son, cellist David Cole (’67), will perform and share memories, along with Marcy Rosen (Cello ’77), and other former students, colleagues, and friends. The tribute takes place in Field Concert Hall at the Curtis Institute of Music. Admission is free and tickets are not required.

The Curtis Institute of Music educates and trains exceptionally gifted young musicians for careers as performing artists on the highest professional level. One of the world’s leading conservatories, Curtis is highly selective and provides full-tuition scholarships to all of its 164 students. In this intimate environment, students receive personalized attention from a celebrated faculty. A busy schedule of performances is at the heart of Curtis’s distinctive “learn by doing” approach. This philosophy has produced an impressive number of notable artists since the school’s founding in 1924, from such legends as Leonard Bernstein and Samuel Barber to current stars Juan Diego Flórez, Alan Gilbert, Hilary Hahn, Jennifer Higdon, and Lang Lang.
