Grammy Awards for Curtis faculty, alumni, and ensemble-in-residence

Congratulations to the Curtis faculty, alumni, and the ensemble-in-residence who were honored at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards on February 10.

Ensemble-in-residence eighth blackbird not only performed on the Grammy Awards pre-telecast, but their album Meanwhile (Cedille Records) won for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance. The title work by Stephen Hartke also won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Classical Composition. This fall eighth blackbird began its three-year residency at Curtis, funded with a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Among the honors for faculty, Edgar Meyer's recording The Goat Rodeo Sessions (Sony Classical) with Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, and Chris Thile won for Best Folk Album. The award for Best Classical Compendium went to a collection of pieces by Krzysztof Penderecki (Naxos), including the composer's Horn Concerto featuring Jennifer Montone with conductor Antoni Wit and the National Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra in Warsaw. Curtis audiences will recall hearing Ms. Montone perform this piece with Robert Spano and the Curtis Symphony Orchestra during the 2009-10 season.

Alumni were also recognized: Alan Gilbert ('92), led several works on Renée Fleming’s Poèmes (Decca Records), which won Best Classical Vocal Solo, and Kim Kashkashian ('75), won Best Classical Instrumental Solo for Kurtág & Ligeti: Music for Viola (ECM New Series). As part of the Harlem Quartet, violinist Melissa White ('07), performed with Chick Corea and Gary Burton on the "Mozart Goes Dancing" track from Hot House (Concord Jazz), which won for Best Instrumental Composition.

Curtis applauds all the groundbreaking guest artists, distinguished faculty, and legendary alumni that were honored at the Grammys. Congratulations to all!
