H.F. "Gerry" and Marguerite Lenfest: Curtis Impact Fact Sheet

[PDF format]

With combined gifts totaling more than $70 million since 2001, H.F. "Gerry" and Marguerite Lenfest have played a pivotal role in initiatives of strategic importance to the Curtis Institute of Music and have inspired support from myriad other new and longtime Curtis supporters during their more than ten years of involvement with the school.

STRATEGIC PLAN (2008-2013)

Lenfest Hall

  • H.F. "Gerry" Lenfest and Marguerite Lenfest purchased the 1616 Locust Street site for Curtis in 2008 and funded the subsequent feasibility study, architectural designs, and legal fees.
  • $30 million challenge grant from the Lenfests accelerated the funding for the project.
  • Curtis met the challenge in 2009, completing a $65 million campaign.
  • Lenfest Hall opened in 2011; to fund the new building Curtis has received more than 300 gifts from individuals and organizations, including 100 percent participation from the school's board of trustees.
  • The first major expansion of the school in more than 20 years, Lenfest Hall added 105,000 square feet of space, doubling the size of the Curtis campus.

Faculty Chair Challenge

  • The Lenfests issued a challenge in 2008, pledging up to $17 million to match gifts of $1.5-$2 million to endow faculty chairs.
  • Curtis completed the Lenfest Faculty Chair Challenge in 2012, raising a total of $34 million for the endowment.
  • The challenge resulted in 11 new faculty chairs in audio-visual arts, cello, composition, double bass, guitar, liberal arts, performance studies, piano, violin (two chairs), and vocal studies.

Rubenstein Centre

  • The Lenfests provided $1 million in 2012 for the acquisition of the Rubenstein Centre at 1620 Locust Street, in partnership with Mark and Robin Rubenstein.
  • The building consolidated advancement staff, provided increased room for programs and student activity in historic buildings on the 1700 block of Locust, and eliminated rental expenses for administrative space.

Curtis On Tour

  • The Lenfests pledged $750,000 in 2012 to support Curtis On Tour through the 2014-15 school year.
  • Curtis On Tour brings ensembles of students, faculty, and alumni around the world, with performances in 27 U.S. cities, 10 European cities, 4 Asian cities, and 3 Latin American cities since its launch in 2008.
  • To date 107 students, 28 alumni, and 16 faculty members have appeared under the auspices of Curtis On Tour.

Zarett Rehab and Fitness

  • The Lenfests provided in excess of $375,000 to launch customized fitness and conditioning programs designed specifically for musicians through Zarett Rehab and Fitness in 2010.
  • Today the program serves up to 40 students annually—nearly a fourth of the student body—with others on a waiting list.
  • Specialized training is tailored to the individual practice and performance goals of each student and includes cardiovascular exercise, strength training, nutritional counseling, and massage.

Lenfest-Annenberg Challenge

  • In 2004 the Lenfest and Annenberg Foundations issued a $6 million challenge grant as part of the Sound for the Century campaign.
  • Curtis completed the Lenfest-Annenberg Challenge in 2006, raising $9 million in new endowment gifts.
  • The school received $1 million from the Annenberg Foundation and $5 million from the Lenfest Foundation, raising a total of $15 million for the Curtis endowment.

Student Fellowships

  • In 2002 the Lenfests pledged $1 million to endow two student fellowships as part of the Sound for the Century campaign.
