Martin Luther King Day Event: The Curtis Institute of Music Partners with City Year and Wells Fargo for a Musical Day of Service at South Philadelphia High School

MEDIA ADVISORY: Students, faculty, and staff from the Curtis Institute of Music will participate in an MLK day of service at South Philadelphia High School, helping to rebuild the school’s music program, in partnership with City Year Philadelphia and Wells Fargo.

WHEN: Monday, January 19
9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cleaning, painting, organizing music room
1:30 to 2 p.m. Curtis Brass Ensemble performance

WHERE: South Philadelphia High School
2101 S. Broad Street, Philadelphia

WHAT: Students, faculty, and staff from the Curtis Institute of Music take part in a day of service at South Philadelphia High School. The school historically had a flourishing music program with well-known alumni such as Marian Anderson, Mario Lanza, Chubby Checker, and members of the Philadelphia Orchestra. But today, they have no music program at all. In preparation for rebuilding the program in the future, Curtis community members will help to revitalize the school’s music room by cleaning, painting, and organizing materials in partnership with members of the South Philadelphia High School community, City Year team members in residence at South Philly High School, and with financial and volunteer support from Wells Fargo. At the end of the day, the Curtis Brass Ensemble will perform a brief program of musical pieces led by Paul Bryan (Trombone ’93), Dean of Faculty and Students at Curtis, interspersed with remarks from students at South Philadelphia High School and an audio clip of one of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s well-known speeches.
