Covington and Fein Lead Curtis Opera Theatre in Britten’s Roman Tragedy Nov 17-20

Curtis Opera Theatre presents four performances of The Rape of Lucretia at Philadelphia’s Prince Theater

[PDF Format]

PHILADELPHIA—November 15, 2016—The Curtis Opera Theatre presents The Rape of Lucretia, Benjamin Britten’s evocative and daring chamber opera, November 17–20 in a fully-staged production at the Prince Theater.

Britten’s powerful tragedy follows the trials of a virtuous wife in ancient Rome as she encounters a brutal prince and a drunken wager. At their intersection, a marriage is defiled and a life destroyed while enigmatic observers relate and react to the wrenching events. The dark tale captures Lucretia’s agony in music of aching beauty, even as it raises unanswerable questions.

Conducting fellow Conner Gray Covington leads members of the Curtis Symphony Orchestra and Jordan Fein returns to the Curtis Opera Theatre as stage director. Scenic design is provided by Amy Rubin with costume design by Ásta Bennie Hostetter and lighting design by Barbara Samuels. The two-act production will be sung in English with supertitles.

Subscription tickets for the 2016–17 Curtis Opera Theatre season are available for $24 or $80 and are sold by the Curtis Patron Services Office at Curtis.edu/tickets or (215) 893-7902. Single tickets are available for $10 or $35 through the Prince Theater Box Office at Princetheater.org or (215) 422-4580.

The Curtis Opera Theatre season is sponsored by the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation and the Wyncote Foundation.

The Curtis Opera Theatre, under the artistic direction of Mikael Eliasen, works with established professional directors and designers to create fresh interpretations of standard repertoire and contemporary works. All of Curtis’s 25 voice and opera students are cast repeatedly each season, receiving a rare level of performance experience on stage and through frequent collaborations with Opera Philadelphia, Curtis on Tour, and the Curtis Symphony Orchestra. As a result Curtis graduates have sung with opera companies all over the world, including La Scala, Covent Garden, the Vienna Staatsoper, Houston Grand Opera, the San Francisco Opera, and the Metropolitan Opera.
