Maurice Ravel

Welcome to the Keys for Curtis "piano pages." For the campaign, this piano has been named after composer Maurice Ravel, one of the twenty-two composers selected to represent the deep heritage and diversity of classical music. A child prodigy, Ravel began his piano studies at age seven and was accepted at the Paris Conservatory at age fourteen. Ravel wrote superb compositions for piano, chamber music ensembles, and orchestra.  Among them, the Piano Concerto for the left hand (1929-20), has been performed numerous times by former Curtis President and Director Gary Graffman.

Ran Jia (Piano '11) Explains the Importance of Fine Instruments

Born in Shanghai, Ran Jia began her piano studies at Curtis at the age of 14 and graduated as a member of the Curtis class of 2011. Ran held the Lelia A. Wike Fellowship during the years she studied at Curtis with Gary Graffman.  Ran was a frequent student recital performer and participated in master classes at Curtis with András Schiff and Richard Goode. Watch the video below to understand why the quality of a piano is important to a young pianist.

Our Thanks to Penelope P. Watkins

Curtis is grateful to Penelope P. "Penny" Watkins whose generous gift made it possible for Curtis to purchase the "Ravel" piano. A member of the Curtis board of trustees since 2002, Penny established the Penelope P. Watkins Chair in Piano Studies held by Curtis faculty member Robert McDonald. In 2011, Penny told us, "I love the piano, obviously, and the institution itself has such merit. Now, with Lenfest Hall going up, it offers a tremendous new chapter for the school moving forward. So as a result, if I could contribute in any way to toward the piano practice resources for the school, I was delighted to do so."

About This Piano

  • On September 8 and 9, 2010, members of the Curtis piano faculty visited the Steinway factory in Long Island and selected twenty-two new pianos needed when Curtis expands its campus to include Lenfest Hall.
  • Steinway & Sons began building fine pianos in 1853. Handmade and built to last for generations, Steinway pianos are exceptional investments as well as superb musical instruments.
  • Curtis has been an "All-Steinway School" since its founding in 1924 - one of nine conservatories, eighty colleges and unversities, and twenty-one other schools of distinction so designated.
  • This piano, one of the school's eight new Steinway Professional Model K upright pianos, was handcrafted in the same factory as Steinway's grand pianos, using the same techniques, conditioning processes, and craftsmen. The Model K, which is fifty-two inches high, features a soundboard larger in area than many grand pianos. Like all Steinway pianos, this musical instrument is built of the finest materials to the highest quality standards.
  • In July, 2011, the "Ravel" Steinway piano was delivered to Lenfest Hall and assigned to Room 412, one of several practice rooms available 24 hours-a-day to Curtis students living in Lenfest Hall.

You Can Help by Purchasing a Piano Key

  • Make a note of the key or keys you would like to select and the name of this piano (Ravel). Then make your contribution online, or call the Curtis Development Office at (215) 893-5279. Just mention that you want to give to "Keys For Curtis."
  • To thank you for helping Curtis purchase this new Steinway piano, we'll send you a "Keys For Curtis" keychain!
